Toothache & swelling
Toothache & swelling
A toothache is a good indication to visit the dentist. Keep the area clean; rinse with warm salt water. Give your child Tylenol or Motrin to help assuage the pain. A visit to the clinic is necessary to allow the dentist to be able to properly diagnose the issue and provide appropriate treatment options. If your child is experiencing severe discomfort and/or facial swelling from an infected tooth, apply cold compresses to the affected area. Call our office right away; swelling of the face is a sign of a serious infection requiring immediate attention.
Bumped
tooth
Bumped tooth
Sometimes a baby tooth can be bumped and become somewhat loosened in its own socket. These teeth can often firm up again on their own over time. Care should be taken to focus on allowing the tooth and gum around it to heal. Soft, gentle diet and preventing activities that may cause further injury will help allow the tooth to heal. With these injuries, color change of the tooth is possible over time. Close observation must be taken to watch for signs of development of a tooth abscess, which may require extraction by the dentist in the clinic.
Chipped
tooth
Chipped tooth
When bumped, teeth can fracture to varying degrees. Oftentimes, a minor chip on a tooth can be monitored so long as the patient does not feel any sensitivity. If the chipped tooth causes discomfort or is an aesthetic concern, consideration is taken to restore the tooth to its natural shape - sometimes with the natural fragment that broke off, or otherwise with tooth-colored filling material. If the tooth fractures into the nerve, immediate dental attention is required in order to prevent infection of the nerve, and also to alleviate pain/discomfort.
Knocked out
tooth
Knocked out tooth
If a baby tooth is knocked out completely, do not try to replant it. This is a tooth for the tooth fairy! We do not replant primary teeth as it can lead to damaging the development of the adult tooth underneath. Focus on allowing the gingiva to heal and providing comfort to the patient - an all-natural fruit popsicle, for instance, is perfect to provide some soothing relief.
If an adult tooth is knocked out, this is a true emergency. Be careful not to touch the root of the tooth as there are sensitive cells on its surface, but instead hold it by the crown (the part we see in a smile). Rinse it gently with milk, and if possible, try to replant the tooth. The sooner the tooth is replaced, the greater the likelihood it will survive. Call our office right away to seek emergency dental treatment immediately.
Keep a knocked out adult tooth, if unable to replant, in a moist environment like a container of milk or saliva.

FAQs
If your child experiences severe pain, swelling, or fever along with a toothache, it's likely an emergency. Also, if the pain is preventing them from eating or sleeping, seek immediate care. When in doubt, call us – we're here to help assess the situation and provide advice.
If it's a permanent tooth, gently rinse it with milk (without scrubbing), and try to reinsert it in the socket. If that's not possible, store it in milk or saliva and contact us immediately. For baby teeth, don't try to reinsert them, but do call us for guidance.
